Bay Migrant Tops Ethnic Awards List
When he ventured to Australia as a backpacker hoping to see kangaroos and koalas, Joep Dekker had no idea he would end up living in Hervey Bay and becoming an award-winning business owner. Mr Dekker, owner of Wild Lotus Restaurant on the Esplanade at Torquay, is one of eight finalists in this year’s Ethnic Business Awards. The awards are Australia’s longest running multicultural business awards which celebrate diversity and multiculturalism as well as the achievements of migrants who come to the country with a suitcase full of dreams. Mr Dekker said this was the second year he was nominated but was thrilled to be a finalist. “It is amazing, I am dumbfounded and who would have thought this would happen when I’m just 27, I had no idea I would even stay here when I came to visit,” Mr Dekker said. “Each of us finalists attended a eon in Brisbane and I was so honoured to mix with some of the best, there were people there who have been building empires for 30 years…I was definitely the youngest person there and my business has only been running for three years which is nothing compared to them.”
